Itinerary

  • Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador is a province of Canada on the country's Atlantic coast in northeastern North America. This easternmost Canadian province comprises two main parts: the island of Newfoundland off the country's eastern coast, and Labrador on the mainland to the northwest of the island.  The Island of Newfoundland has its own dialects of the English, French, and Irish languages. The English dialect in Labrador shares much with that of Newfoundland. Labrador also has its own dialects of Innu-aimun and Inuktitut.

  • Gander

Gander is a Canadian town located in the northeastern part of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, approximately 40 kilometres south of Gander Bay.  It is the site of Gander International Airport, formerly an important refuelling point for transatlantic aircraft, and, to this day, a preferred stopping point for transatlantic aircraft that need to land because of on-board medical or security emergencies.  Most of the streets in Gander are named after famous aviators, including Amelia Earhart, Alcock and Brown, Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, Marc Garneau and Chuck Yeager.

  • Rocky Harbour

Rocky Harbour is located north of Woody Point, Newfoundland.  This small village was formerly known as Small Bay or Little Harbour.  It is a key tourist town located directly within the Gros Morne National Park’s boundaries.

  • St. John's

St. John's is the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. The city enjoys a long and vibrant history as the oldest English-founded city in North America. The harbour was a frequent haven for European fisherman throughout the early 1500s, and was officially declared an English colony in 1583. St. John's has over 400 restaurants. Situated in the downtown area on Water St. and Duckworth, there are numerous shops, restaurants and historic buildings. It is a rugged and rocky outcrop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with a distinctive accent and fishing culture that makes it completely unique.

  • Trinity

Trinity is a small town located on Trinity Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador.  The harbour was first used by fishing ships around the 16th century. The Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real is said to have named this place because he arrived here on Trinity Sunday in 1501. It was settled by merchants from Poole in England during the 18th century and the town contains a number of buildings recognized as Registered Heritage Structures by the province.

The light is still run by the Canadian Coast Guard. It is now automated, but the lightkeeper's house is open as a park interpretive exhibit. The exhibit interprets how people have lived along this coast and harvested the sea for more than 4,000 years. In the mid-19th century, James Ryan, the son of an Irish immigrant, established a fish exporting business in the town that helped to create a thriving economy and make Bonavista one of Newfoundland's largest fishing communities. They made their fortune selling cured cod to Europe and the West Indies. At one time, this salt fish complex was producing nearly 10 percent of Newfoundland's entire fish exports The massive catches of cod were salted and dried on shore and then carried direct to markets or sold through larger merchants in St. John's. Today, six of the main buildings, including the Ryan's home, the retail shop, salt store, retail store, carriage house and tenement house still stand on a slope overlooking the harbour.
