Itinerary

  • Hungary

Hungary is a landlocked country in the Carpathian Basin of Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. The foundation of Hungary was laid in the late Ninth Century by the Magyar chieftain Árpád, whose great grandson István ascended to the throne with a crown sent from Rome in 1000. The Kingdom of Hungary existed with minor interruptions for 946 years, and at various points was regarded as one of the cultural centers of the Western world. It was succeeded by a Communist era (1947–1989). In 1989 it opened its border to Austria, thus accelerating the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. The present government is parliamentary republic. Hungary was one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world in the past decade. Its capitol, Budapest, is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. The country is home to the second largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Hévíz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural grassland in Europe (Hortobágy).

  • Budapest

Budapest was originally two cities on each side of one of the most beautiful stretches of the Danube River – Buda, the older, more graceful part, with cobbled streets and medieval buildings, and Pest, the commercial center. In Buda, Gellért Hill gives a wonderful view of the city, river and mountains. On the hill is the Citadella fort, the Royal Palace which houses the National Gallery, the rampart of Halászbástya (Fisherman’s Bastion), so called because it was the duty of the city’s fishermen to protect the northern side of the Palace during the Middle Ages, and the great Mátyás Templom (church) with its multicolored tiled roof. On the Pest side are the Parliament; the Hungarian National Museum, containing remarkable treasures ranging from the oldest skull found in Europe to Franz Liszt’s gold baton; the Belvárosi Templom, Hungary’s oldest church, dating from the 12th century, the Museum of Fine Arts housing European paintings and the Ethnographic Museum. Margaret Island, connected to both Buda and Pest by bridges, is a park with a sports stadium, swimming pool, spas, a rose garden and fountains. Budapest has about 100 hot springs.

  • Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is in Central Europe, bordered by Poland to the northeast, Germany to the west, Austria to the south, and Slovakia to the east. The Czech lands fell under the Habsburg rule from 1526, later becoming part of the Austrian Empire. The independent Republic of Czechoslovakia was formed in 1918, following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire after World War I. In an 1948 coup d'état, Czechoslovakia became a communist-ruled state, until the Velvet Revolution in 1989 returned to democracy. On January 1, 1993 Czechoslovakia peacefully dissolved into its constituent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Prague is the capitol and largest city. Prague is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with preserved examples from all periods of its history and is among the most visited cities on the continent. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world.

  • Prague

Prague is picturesquely located on the banks of the Vltava (Moldau) River, and has always played an important part in the history of Europe. The ‘Paris of the East’ is noted for its magnificent architecture with the city’s historical center being listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

  • Austria

Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe. The origins of Austria date back to the ninth century, however, it was in the 14th and 15th centuries when the Habsburg empire became one of the continent's most powerful. The country expanded to include portions of modern day Hungary, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia and Italy. The empire declined and was ultimately broken apart after WWI. The country was annexed by Germany, but regained its independence in 1955. Austria is a largely mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. The biggest area are the Austrian Alps, which constitute 62% of Austria's total area. The capital is the city of Vienna on the Danube River. It is home to many famous composers; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner, Johann Strauss, Sr. & Jr., Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alban Berg. Eighteenth and nineteenth century composers were drawn to the city due to the patronage of the Habsburgs, and made Vienna the European capital of classical music.

  • Vienna

Vienna is situated in the northeast with the Danube River running through the northern suburbs of the city. The Ringstrasse forms the boundary of the elegant First District, with its fine architecture, shops and hotel.  The Hapsburgs who ruled the country for six centuries resided in the Hofburg where the Kaiser-Apartments (Imperial Apartments) and the Crown Jewels are now open to the public. The Spanish Riding School in the Hofburg where the famous white Lipizzaner stallions perform finely executed dressage manoeuvres to Viennese classical music is very popular with tourists. Schloss Schönbrunn, can be compared with Versailles; its landscaped park is also home to the world’s oldest zoo. There are more than 50 museums open to the public, including the Natural History Museum, the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts, the Museum of the 20th Century, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museums quarter, the Künstlerhaus, the Clock and Watch Museum and the Technology Museum.
