Itinerary

  • Tanzania

Tanzania has a wealth of natural attractions. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, is situated in the northeast, near the tourist hub of Arusha. The nearby game parks of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire receive most of the visitor volume. Other notable game parks are Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park in the south, and Gombe National Park in the west. Further to the west are the Great Lakes, Lake Victoria (Africa's largest lake) and Lake Tanganyika (the world's deepest lake). The capital city of Dar Es Salaam is located on the eastern shore, but the main attraction is the exotic island of Zanzibar lying just offshore, with its Swahili architecture, spice plantations and white sand beaches.

  • Arusha

Arusha is a city of northern Tanzania surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks. Beautifully situated below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, it has a pleasant climate and is close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as having its own Arusha National Park on Mount Meru. International flights arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and regional flights use Arusha airport.

  • Dar Es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania. It is also the country's richest city and a regionally important economic centre. There are a few sights in the downtown though it is not known as a tourist city but rather a gateway. Located near the island of Zanzibar, a fast ferry is an interesting ride. Regular flights are also available to Arusha.

  • Ngorongoro

"The Ngorongoro Crater is often called ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World’. A massive extinct volcano, the sheet walls drop thousands of feet to a "Noah's Ark" of animals on the verdant floor below. Large herds of zebra, buffalo, antelope and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist.

  • Selous

Only 200 km West of Dar es Salaam lies the mighty Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa’s least known yet wildest conservation areas. At an unbelievable 55,000 sq km Selous is almost twice the size of Belgium and four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the North, covering 5% of Tanzania’s land area. The Selous’ ecosystem as a whole is made up of a few conservation areas, namely Mikumi in the North and the Kilombero game controlled area in the West, covering in total over 90,000 sq km of pristine wilderness devoid of human influence. Fed by the mighty Rufiji River, the largest river in East Africa which drains most of South Western Tanzania’s water, this reserve is home to over 1,000,000 large animals and is home to over half of Tanzania’s elephant population. Selous is unique among reserves in Tanzania as it encompasses an area exclusively devoted to tourism in its Northern part, making up for about 10% of the reserve’s total size. Selous has over 2,100 species of plants, 350 species of birds, 60,000 elephant, 108,000 buffalos and an estimated 1,300 of the worlds’ approximately 4,000 remaining rare wild dogs giving guests an opportunity to glimpse all of these exotic animals in true unspoilt wilderness.

  • Serengeti

Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, the Serengeti is massive in size, 14,763 sq km (5,700 sq miles). Famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers the most diverse game-viewing in Africa.

  • Tarangire

Tarangire National Park is probably one of the least visited of the northern Tanzanian game parks, and retains a real air of undiscovered Africa, particularly in the south of the park. Just a two hours drive away from Arusha, it lies a short distance to the south east of Lake Manyara and covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometres. It is named after the Tarangire River that flows through the park.

    Day 2: Arusha - Tarangire

From Arusha, your guide will drive you to the Tarangire National Park. This commute takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

On this afternoon drive you will notice the unusually shaped baobab trees, also known as the “upside-down tree”. Look up and you might find the tree climbing African pythons. This is one of the world's largest species of snakes, but do not worry, it is also a non-venomous species. Tarangire's pythons climb trees, as do its lions and leopards, lounging in the branches.

    Accommodation: Swala Camp

Swala Camp is buried in the core of Tarangire National Park, beside the Gurusi wetlands of Tanzania and where sprees of elephants and bird life spend their time. The private, permanent tents are structured to fit the comfort of home and suit the indulgences of vacation. Lavish safari-style travel is embraced here, as full silver service is provided at meals and superior wines mark the ambiance of fine dining.

    Day 3: Tarangire - Ngorongoro

Your guide will pick you up from the Tarangire National Park and drive you to the massive Ngorongoro crater. This drive will take approximately 3 1/2 hours.

Time permitting, there are many optional activities. Depending on which lodge you're staying at, activities include: nature walks, cultural village visits, hike to Endoro waterfalls, bike tours, coffee plantation tours and more. Some of these can be prebooked through your destination specialist while others can be booked directly with the lodge upon arrival.

    Accommodation: Crater Lodge

Hanging off the edge of the world-renowned Ngorongoro Crater, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits the opulent Crater Lodge. On the eastern side of the Serengeti in Northern Tanzania, the lodge is an astonishing example of accommodations somehow built in the great African wilderness. It comprises three separate camps totaling 30 suites of the highest standard and most breathtaking views. Dining is a gala event, where one may put on their best etiquette and flaunt the outfits that have been collecting dust when roughing it during the day. Here, one may feast on cuisine from the American chef’s world-knowledge. Activities include game drives involving visits to the Ngorongoro Crater.

    • LionsLions

    Day 4: Ngorongoro

Private transportation and guide in the Ngorongoro national park.

Descend into the Ngorongoro caldera to view the wildlife on the crater floor. The crater is roughly 20 km/12 mi wide and 600 m/2,000 ft deep, once you've reached the top of the caldera it takes about 45 minutes to descend to the crater floor. The floor is home to a rich and highly concentrated wildlife. Some 20,000 mammals of size live there, including about 20 black rhinoceros, making the crater the best place in Tanzania to see the rhino. The crater floor also has one of the highest carnivore densities in the world. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals are commonly seen, while leopards, servals and bat-eared foxes may be seen with some good luck. You'll spend most of the day in the crater.

Dining is set with elegant glassware, white porcelain, and crisp tablecloths. Champagne glasses clink in the background, while animals wander the property. Activities include archery and badminton for the whole luxury experience, though others prefer a little game-gazing.

    • ImpalaImpala

    Day 6: Serengeti

You will have a private guide throughout your stay at Singita.

Spend today searching out Impala, one of Africa's most beautiful and graceful animals. Previously thought to be part of the gazelle tribe, Impalas have been found to be so different that they are now classified as their own sub-family status. When frightened or startled the whole impala herd starts randomly leaping to confuse their predator. They can jump distances more than 10 meters (33 ft) and 3 meters (9 ft) high. Leopards, cheetah, lions and wild dogs prey on impala. Impala can reach running speeds of approximately 50 to 55 mph (80 to 90 km/h) to escape its predators. See if you can track these incredible animals!

    Day 7: Serengeti

You will have a private guide throughout your stay at Singita.

Spend the day taking in the spectacle of the famous wildebeest migration. This annual migration through the Serengeti and Masai Mara is one of the safari highlights of Africa. The wildebeest migration moves in a basic clockwise direction throughout the year in Serengeti eco-system and move north into Masai Mara, Kenya from June/July through to Sep/October. Sightings cannot be guaranteed as the herds move according to availability of food source and migration movements can be erratic. The herds are accompanied by zebra and Thomson's gazelle and are stealthily hunted by local predators such as leopard, lion and hyena.

Day 9: Dar Es Salaam - Selous

Airport transfer with private vehicle and english speaking driver.

Take your flight from Dar Es Salaam (DAR) to Selous today. The flight duration is approximately 45mins.

With the departure of the seasonal rains (summer) and the onset of the dry season (winter), the environment becomes progressively drier. In response, wildlife concentrates along the Chi, Lukula and Luwego Rivers. The dry conditions allow for easy navigation throughout the entire Lukula Selous area, both by vehicle and foot. Vegetation is low, and water is limited, providing easy spotting. Walking along the river's sandy embankments, crossing from side to side gives unrivaled access to tracking. Fly camping (4 night stay) is at its prime in this season, with predictable weather. All camp facilities and activities are available. From August to early November, canoeing is dependent on water levels and can be limited.

    Accommodation: Lukula Camp

Lukula Camp embodies the spirit of early African exploration, but with simple indulgences. It draws from the influences of Frederick Courteney Selous' camps of bygone days. He and his contemporaries would have found home and comfort here - a place to renew their spirits, document their discoveries and continue their intrepid ways. It is in this vein, that guests are welcomed into the stylish and authentic retreat of Lukula Camp.

    • ElephantElephant

    Day 10: Selous

Lukula Selous offers an enhanced wilderness adventure. Instead of a set schedule of morning and afternoon game drives, focus is on a close connection with the landscape and its wildlife. This is possible in a vehicle or even a kayak, but the real experience of Lukula is on foot led by experienced porters, trackers and professional (and armed) guides. Following the paths of buffalo and elephant forms the foundation of the day and reveals other natural phenomena. Using traditional tracking techniques and temporary "grass hides", we can safely observe and photograph animals while leaving them undisturbed.

    Day 11: Selous

Lukula Selous is a private photographic sanctuary of over 300,000 acres that specialises in experiential travel – authentic life changing adventures in Africa’s last great untouched wilderness – the Selous Game Reserve which is 55,000 sq. kms in Southern Tanzania. The weather and environment in Lukula is a constant cycle of dry and wet characterised by two periods of rain that bless the land each year. The short rains usually arrive in December and are quick to fade in January. The long rains commence in mid to late February staying through to early April. The Reserve comprises diverse habitat from open flood plains interspersed with dense riparian forests that lie along the Lukula, Luwegu and Chi rivers to open savanna, which recedes to forested, rolling hills and steep ridges of exposed rock. A landscape seldom visited and unchanged by man, rich in wildlife and spectacular with nature. Wildlife sighted in the area are Elephant, Buffalo, Impala, Waterbuck, Greater Kudu, Klipspringer, Eland, Hippo, Nile Crocodile, Lion, Wild dog, Leopard, Sable, Bush Duiker and exceptional birdlife with sightings of Pel’s Fishing owl, Wattled crane, Palm nut vulture common as well as a plethora of more common species, a total of 350 recorded to date.

The project is a brave new conservation initiative, pioneered by two young conservationists, Anton Turner and Ryan Wienand who have set out to maintain, and expand this unspoilt landscape, through low impact sustainable tourism. The Selous Project’s safari experience is completely unique. There is no fixed itinerary. An idea shared at the dinner table or an inspiration at the dawn of day, will provide the spark for your next adventure.

  • Fun Facts

Did you know? The Serengeti covers approximately 14,763 sq kilometres, making it Tanzania's largest national park. It is home to the world's largest concentrations of wildebeest and gazelle (which number over 1,000,000 each), as well as large numbers of zebras (200,000) and lions, elephants, and rhinoceros (3,000 each). Each year huge herds migrate across the virtually treeless Serengeti in search of grazing land.
