Trip Description

This itinerary starts in Johannesburg where you'll overnight. This itinerary will enable to you to explore Zimbabwe for a few days before heading over to Botswana. We feel the best way to explore the country is by visiting various areas which would include both wet camps and dry camps. The wet camps will allow you to explore the delta by motorized boat or dug out canoe and you'll also have the opportunity to traverse by foot. In the traditional dry camps, open 4X4's are the way to go. Upon arrival at the lodges you'll discuss all of the options with your guide. This itinerary will give you just an idea of what we can arrange for you but it's always better to arrange a discussion with one of our Destination Experts who will help create the perfect trip for you.

Itinerary

  • South Africa

South Africa is located at the southern tip of Africa, and features one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town. A sublime location, great beaches, nearby vineyards, great food, and cheap diamonds - there is a lot of love about the city. The Garden Route is a short drive away, passing through the quaint towns of Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley. It is best experienced with an overnight in Knysna.  Kruger National Park is another top draw, and boasts some of the finest lodges on the continent.

  • Johannesburg

Johannesburg or Jo'burg, as the locals call the city of the gold, is the biggest metropolis in South Africa. With its 3.2 million citizens the city on the Witwatersrand is the predominant commercial centre and the economic motor of the Republic of South Africa. It is the international flight gateway for most of southern Africa.

  • Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa, between Zambia to the north and South Africa to the south. The official language of Zimbabwe is English but most people speak Shona. The country has experienced a decade of challenges stemming from its dictatorship government which has resulted in hyperinflation, chronic shortages and civil unrest.  This is a great shame, because for decades Zimbabwe was "the place to go" in southern Africa.  It still has the majority of top resorts at Victoria Falls. And south of the capitol, Harare, is the Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Great Zimbabwe, or "stone buildings", consists of hundreds of great stone ruins spread out over a 500 km² (200 square mile) area. It is the remnant of one of the great African civilizations.

  • Matetsi Private Game Reserve

The fourth largest river in Africa, the Zambezi provides a permanent lifeline for the reserve, attracting large herds of elephant, buffalo and other large mammals in the dry winter months. Just 38 km (24 miles) above Victoria Falls, the Zambezi at Matetsi is broad and dotted with small islands. Nile crocodile and Cape clawless otter frolic in the river’s waters, taking full advantage of the more than 80 species of fish found in the Zambezi, while immense hippo venture out onto the river’s banks to graze at night. Birds are abundant on the floodplains, as are waterbuck and herds of elephant and buffalo.

  • Botswana

Formerly known as Bechaunaland, a British protectorate, Botswana gained independence in September 1966. Botswana is most famous for its two sublime game parks, the Okavango Delta and Chobe reserve. The Okavango is the world's largest inland delta and has no outlet to the sea - baffling early explorers. It turns out that the massive volume of waters simply disappear into the Kalahari Desert, which covers 70% of Botswana's land surface. This unexpectedly lush swamp in the midst of scorching desert is a magnet for wild game and birds. Nearby Chobe reserve is famous for its elephants, the world's largest.

Maun is the tourism hub of the country, with the capitol of Gaborone located on the southern border. Botswana is a rare country in Africa, with no civil unrest, balanced budgets, working democracy, and one of the world's fastest growing economies. It is also the world's largest producer of diamonds and is twice the size of the United Kingdom - yet only has a population of 1.9 million people. Since independence it has had one of the fastest growth rates in per capita income in the world. Botswana's people, truly unique landscapes and game are hugely impressive, it is well worth a visit.

  • Okavango

The Okavango is a labyrinth of lagoons, lakes and hidden channels covering an area of over 17,000 square km and the largest inland delta in the world. Trapped in the parched Kalahari sands it is a magnet for the wildlife who depend on the permanent waters of this unique feature. Sometimes called a 'swamp', the Okavango is anything but. Moving, mysterious, placid, gentle and beautiful, from a wide and winding channel it spreads through tiny, almost unnoticeable channels that creep away behind a wall of papyrus reed, into an ever expanding network of increasingly smaller passages.

Take your flight from Chobe to Okavango on Mack Air (light aircraft from Kasane) today. Includes departure tax.

Transfer between your lodge in Victoria Falls and Kasane by shared shuttle.

The Okavango Delta is of course flooded for much of the year and when it is, you can experience serene silence at the gentle pace of a poled mokoro excursion along the narrow Delta channels. Just sit back and relax as they glide through lily ponds on local dugout canoes while they get eye to eye with a buffalo as it laps water from the river, watch crocodiles sunbathe on the banks or cruise past a pod of hippos as they lie in a pool. Fish eagles, frogs and fabulous lilies form much of this experience, but more frequently it is the quietness and gentle pace that makes its impression on you after a mokoro morning.

    Accommodation: Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

Set in the wilderness of the Okavango Delta near the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, the Sandibe Safari Lodge offers an opportunity to interact with animals and friendly staff. Learn about the region's wildlife, as guides lead the way through the jungle. Knowledgeable and patient, guests may satisfy their curiosity by asking questions. Later on, lounge by the swimming pool and savor the tranquility of the surrounding forest.

Day 6: Moremi Game Reserve - Okavango

River cruises in an electrically powered ‘eco boat’ or mokoro - explore the waterways of the Okavango by boat in the company of our experienced guides. Learn the fascinating details of the Delta's network of channels, fringed by dense reeds and papyrus. A good variety of fish can be found in the clear waters and fishing trips can be arranged on request. Spot the nests of weavers and warblers in the papyrus beds and watch out for malachite kingfishers among the taller stems. Beautifully coloured frog species, such as the painted reed frog, abound. Waterlilies brighten up the surface of lagoons, where sleepy hippo splash beneath the surface.

After a relaxing morning you'll meet up with others at the lodge for your afternoon game drive. Who knows what the afternoon will bring, mammals are great but you'll become a birder after spending time in Botswana. This area is most famous for its raptor populations - Martiale Agles, Secretary Birds, Bateleurs and a whole host of little Raptors comprise the main feature of this area. There are wonderful water birds to be found along the Khwai river and this river is fairly open and makes for easy birding, birds to look out for are Purple Gallinule, Saddle Billed Stork, Black Stork, Kingfishers, Slatey Egret and a whole host of little Waders.

Accommodation

  • Culinary Moments

Imagine settling in after a thrilling evening game-drive, to enjoy a delicious alfresco banquet of Pan-African cuisine in the boma illuminated by dozens of candles and lanterns.

  • Natural Wonders

In a country, which is approximately 80% arid, the Okavango Delta is a permanent life giving water source. It is a rather bizarre phenomenon in which a major mountain fed river reaches the vast tracts of the Kalahari and disperses into the floodplain in a maze of delta channels which are eventually consumed by the desert. Within the desert, the channels of the delta attract an abundance of animal and bird life.

  • Wildlife Encounters

Did you know? Elephants live in a highly organized social structure referred to as a matriarchal herd. The herd is typically composed of up to ten females and their young. Males beyond the age of maturity are with the herd only during mating. In Botswana, there is an estimated elephant population of over 120,000 - we are sure to see a few along the way!
